Luckily, Jennifer was calling for quiet on the set, and Dawn turned her attention toward it. They ran through the scene a third time, and then Jennifer and Amy conferred a moment. Jennifer announced that the crew was to move to the next setup.

Kyle came over and retrieved Ralph, telling him he was to be in the next setup, so Ralph excused himself from Dawn, momentarily squeezing the top of her hand in a sweaty grip, and then luckily he left.

The next setup required the camera to move its position, which caused the lighting guys to change a few lights, but basically, everything else was the same. Ralph was alone in the scene, yelling at someone off-camera as he ran through the salt mine. Before each take, he complained quite a bit about the torch he carried. It was too heavy, the flame was too hot. Each time, Dawn noticed that the crew pretty much ignored him or said, "You're a trooper, Ralph." After three takes of that, Jennifer announced that the crew would be breaking for lunch and everyone was to return to the set in exactly one hour.

As the crew meandered away from the set, some lingering a moment to turn off a light, cover the camera, or readjust a prop, Dawn wondered whether she should follow them or just stay where she was.

Presently, she felt a hand on her shoulder.

"I'm sorry I took so long." Kate smiled down at her.

"It's definitely okay. I could watch this all day."

"Ready for lunch?"

"Sure." Dawn stood and they walked outside into the sunshine. "Is Hannah joining us?"

"No, she isn't. We haven't been doing a lot together lately. It's more just.. .business."

The film's caterer was set up along the side wall of the soundstage. Smoke rolled out of a large mobile kitchen that faced a tented canopy. Under the canopy, many rows of picnic tables were lined up and covered in red and white checkered tablecloths.

The crew was moving through the caterer's lunch line at a fairly fast pace, and Kate and Dawn joined them. After filling their plates, they picked out a picnic table at the far end of the tent, away from most of the crew.

"If you don't mind my asking, what did you mean about it's mostly business with Hannah?" Dawn said after they'd begun to eat.

"I don't mind. It's something I don't like to admit but it's true. The relationship is on a down swing, I suppose you could say. We've been fighting a lot, and I'm realizing it's not been the kind of relationship I've wanted."

"What are the fights about?"

Kate chuckled. "Pretty much everything. Hannah doesn't like it when she doesn't get her way. And I've been guilty of giving in a lot. But lately, I've been resistant to her whims, and that's the problem."

"Have you tried to talk it out?"

Kate looked glum. "There's really no talking it out with her."

"I'm sorry."

"It's my fault. I should have begun to find my voice a long time ago. At the beginning of the whirlwind, it was easier to shrug and get over it.
